News announcement -
August 18th, 2005
Well, its finally come to pass that we are switching to this website. Its been a long time in process, and is still being worked on. From now on all big news annoucements will take place here, and not on the forum. This news page will be the new Progress Log. A link to the old one in the forum is available on the left. Until we can update the link on the site: Pretty soon we’ll be take submissions of fan art and such. In the meantime we are going to fill out those pages with old stuff we’ve collected over the years, and then we’ll setup a method to add more. Thanks for hanging in there so long with us. We’re progressing, slowing but surely. - Geuis
Forum is temporarily down -
September 5th, 2005
Unfortunately the forum has been hacked. It happened sometime last week. Neo Ice is trying to restore an old backup copy. Please keep visiting for updated information. Development of DoI is still going along.
Update on forum restoration -
September 9th, 2005
Neo Ice has sent me a copy of the pre-hacking database and a copy of the post-hacking. Sadly, the post hacking db is much, much smaller than the pre. We’re looking into trying to restore it, but where the forums will be hosted is still in question. Sourceforge may be an option, or a set of forums I have installed on my own website http://forums.thetechgurus.net could be used. Once we restore everything, we may lose the last couple of months of posts. This is bad, but it would be worse to lose the forums altogether. We’ll keep you posted.
Another update -
September 19th, 2005
Its being updated. I’m having a hard time restoring the existing backup into the new phpbb installation on sourceforge. I’m now going to try and do the sql commands line by line, to see where the problem is. Geuis
Forum update -
September 21st, 2005
Ok, I’m 99% sure I’ll be able to restore the forums. It appears that the backup was so large, the phpbb builtin backup utility was timing out when trying to upload it. So, I have done a couple of tests of isolating out table data insertion sets for the database and have been able to get small tables to import when done individually. There are quite a few tables though, so its going to take me a couple days to isolate each table set and then manually insert them back in. Hopefully once that is done then everything will be running again.
Updates -
October 6th, 2005
The forums have been restored. They can now be accessed at http://www.dawnofinfinity.org/forum. Sadly, we were only able to restore them from an update from mid-May. At least we didn’t lose them all. We want to thank Neo Ice for providing hosting and management for the DoI forums for the last 3 years. A great community has developed around the idea of an open-source, multi-player space sim inspired by Escape Velocity, and Neo Ice has helped to foster that growth. From here on myself, Captain Bob, and Neo Ice are admins on the forums. Any of the three of us will be able to take care of issues with the forums. We’ll be making more updates to tighten up the forum in the next few days, in addition to fixing some things on the website such as adding content for download. The links on the left-side of the page have been fixed to refer locally to this website.
New Wiki! -
October 22nd, 2005
I’ve setup a new wiki for the project. Unfortunately it cant be hosted on sourceforge due to restrictions on their servers. Easy URL: http://www.dawnofinfinity.org/wiki Direct Url: http://doiwiki.thetechgurus.net
Domain Update -
November 29th, 2005
I still have an open ticket with Sourceforge about the domain name. It hasn’t been touched by their admins since before Thanksgiving. I have not found a problem so far with any other DNS settings, so we’re still waiting.
Domain name update and other news -
December 27th, 2005
Sorry everything’s been down. The domain name expired on me and I didn’t realize. Unfortunately it was registered through a company that no longer exists, so I am still trying to figure out how to get it back. The forums are restored. We are also looking at a new MMO service called Multiverse.net. http://www.multiverse.net.
Multiverse is Out -
January 3rd, 2006
The coders have agreed that Multiverse has too many limitations for us to use it. Instead, we will look into using some networking libraries with our existing code. RakNet has been suggested before, and Busonerd has also suggested Ice. These are just the first two to be considered; there are no doubt other possibilities. So new coding will be delayed as we look for the best solution to handle low-level networking. RakNet: http://www.rakkarsoft.com/ |
