--- WAHAY, NEW VERSION! ---
Version 0.1.0 - Windows [628 KB]
Version 0.1.0 - Mac OS X [1.0 MB]
Version 0.1.0 (the build without networking) is complete; details can be found in the readme files accompanying each download. For now, let's just say... I hope my starfield is parallaxy enough. :)
Corun is currently working on the networking code, while Captain Bob and I are working on the bitmap font. We should have more updates in the near future, as well as (hopefully) a build for Mac OS Classic. _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

--- NEW VERSION ---
Version 0.1.1 - Windows [1.0MB]
Version 0.1.1 (another build without networking) is complete; details can be found in the readme files accompaying each download, as usual. No MacOS version, unfortunately, because Corun was having some problems with distributing the SDL/OpenGL framework files, and he wanted to wait until the networking code was finished to write an installer.
Though this release introduced several exciting new features and squashed several key bugs, I currently await Corun's progress on the redesigned client networking code. Once it is written, I'll merge the changes in and release Version 0.2.0 (the build with networking! ). _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

-- NEW VERSION, SOON --
Version 0.2 is pretty much complete, i have finished all the network code and it should be easy to merge with the pc version and then get version 2 out. I have tested the version with both bob and goon and it went very well, i would release a preliminary release to you guys tonite but i have still not really resolved the frameworks problem, i had to give bob and goon some complicated instructions to get it to work.
So like i say, we are progressing in a week or two we should have a pretty good client.
Note to vulcan : i have not emailed you the network source because i need to tidy it up a bit first but i will post it to you as soon as possible in the morning. Now however it is 4:44 am and i think i deserve to retire for the..er..morning |

--- NEW VERSION ---
Version 0.1.2 - Windows [1.0MB]
Version 0.1.2 - Mac OS X [1.5MB]
Version 0.1.2 (yet another build without networking) is complete; details can be found in the readme files accompaying each download, as usual.
This release introduced even more exciting new features, not the least of which is... SHOOTING-SHOOTING-SHOOTING-SHOOTING-SHOOTING!!! w00t!!! Sorry... a little too exciting. :D
[Edit: Corun has compiled a MacOS build, not out of the kindness of his heart but because he wanted to try his hand at shooting JKirk.
As there is no installer, users may need to copy the SDL/GL frameworks manually.] _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

--- NEW VERSION ---
Version 0.2.0 - Windows [1.0MB]
Version 0.2.0 - Mac OS X [1.4 MB]
Version 0.2.0 (the very first build WITH networking) is complete; details can be found in the readme files accompaying each download, as usual.
This release introduced even more exciting new features, not the least of which is... *drum roll* NETWORKING! :D
I skipped 0.1.3, but the full functionality of the improved AI is still available in 0.2.0 as follows: if the commandline argument /demo is passed to Version 0.2.0 or later, it will not attempt to connect to the server, but will instead launch a demo of the AI/shooting/other advanced features.
(For Corun's MacOS build, as there is no installer, users may need to copy the SDL/GL frameworks manually.) _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

A little heads up from me :
In the mac version you will notice that the multidisplay doesn't have any names on the tabs. This was a foolish mistake by me... i forgot to put them in... Sorry...
Also i don't think you need to copy the sdl frameworks are anything and i believe that the app should just work fine out of the box with no installation required. If it doesn't work however (you will notice that it just bounces in the dock and disappears again) the please post in the bug reports thread, thanks!) |

Version 0.2.1 is almost ready; it's basically complete, except for a few bugs with hostility determination. For instance, the damage tolerance is currently zero: one shot of friendly fire and JKirk & Co. turn hostile.
Hopefully, I'll be able to iron out those remaining bugs soon, and release the new version. It already features, among other things, Captain Bob's new font (which looks great at the default 1024x768 resolution, I might add), and a spherically textured, fully rotating planet that shows up on the radar.
Unfortunately, I anticipate the development process will slow down quite a bit as school approaches, as both Corun and I will have less and less time to kill. A pity, but such is life. _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

--- NEW VERSION ---
Version 0.2.1 - Windows [1.1 MB]
Version 0.2.1 - Mac OS X : Corun will post link later, once he builds it
Version 0.2.1 is complete. As mentioned previously, this release features Captain Bob's new font, and a spherically textured, rotating planet that shows up on the radar. I also included screenshot support; currently, it takes screenshots as BMP files of the form screen#.bmp, where # is the image number, and stores them in the program's home directory.
As per the poll conducted not too long ago, the default display settings have been changed to 1024x768x32 (fullscreen), though lower (and higher) resolutions and windowed mode are available through commandline switches. 1280x1024 looks fine; technically, there's not problem with 800x600 or 640x480, if you enjoy squinting constantly to read the font (which scales to less than one pixel thick in places). A more scalable font would be greatly appreciated. And no, Feanor, it doesn't support 1280x960. :P
This will likely be the last release for the next couple of weeks, at least, for the simple reason that I have a life of my own (I know, shocking). It's almost that time of year again, and we all know that can't be good news. So I'll be popping in and out of the boards, but I doubt I'll have much time to develop the client seriously until perhaps mid-September. (Though, given the state of the server, I'd say we have a few more pressing matters to deal with. ) _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

Indeed, as he says i am also going to be busy for the next couple of weeks. I start school middle of next week and this is the year i start doing gcse's which are the major exams etc that you have to do for university. I will therefor have to do things other than doi.
I think the next few weeks should be server time. In the next few weeks i would like to see a new and working server written by feanor, and a new place to run it, be it at the place i gave feanor or at neo's sourcecod we need to find a better hosting place. I would also like to see some more people to help with the server. Feanor's a good programmer, but there is no use telling one guy to program the base of a complex server in his spare time when he goes to school and expect it to happen quickly.
I think that we should advertise for more people but not in a public way, it should be more us looking for developers and asking if they can help rather than us saying we want developers and waiting for them to come to us.
I think that in the next few weeks the following things should be done by the following people :
Captain Bob and Goon : your ships so far are both very good, i reckon get 6 ships done (in total) and make their roles be suitable to what they look and what you expect us to need (ie, make shuttles as well as huge warships) If possible make them have a dominent colour that is easy to change so that when we have races we can use the same ships but with different colours.
Feanor : Continue working, on second thought... work harder :D
Geuis : I am not sure of your programming skills but i thought you knew c++... if i am right then you should help feanor with the server. If not then should should write a real document containing the real server protocol and you should ask feanor what it is, not jusy write one for him to use...
Neo Ice : co-ordinate with feanor, try to get the server up and running on sourcecod. These server outages are hampering the project.
Chestnut : Maintain the website and get the community section finished, and also look for other places that we can host servers. When ultrapeers are working the more servers the better.
Grundalator : If you can program, talk to Feanor, if not then do you have server space anywhere? if not then can you do graphics? if none of the above then just offer your help to someone and i'd be grateful. I know i have seen your name in places on ambrosia boards and i vaguly remember you developing some ev plugin or something? So if you have experience in programming or graphics, please help.
General Cade Smart, Vash, Atomic, Pod, Swiftstream and anyone else : Stay out of the way of the technical stuff but keep bug testing and saying what you think it does wrong. Just don't say things like the following :
| Quote: |
I don't know how to program so i don't understand.
|
If you don't understand then don't ask unless the bit you understand was directed at you.
And also don't complain about things like the server being down. If its down we know its down and can't do anything about it...
Vulcan4096, Me : Start school, try to bug fix current release etc untill no bugs (and add a few features on the way) untill the server can handle new stuff like shooting and movement etc. We will try to be around and code but to be honest, we have lives. We can't just program DOI all the time. And the same with feanor and infact everyone else who has a life, he has started school too, please don't put presure on any one to get stuff done, the pressure of exams, school etc is bad enough as it is . And also a note to feanor here, sorry i have been pushing you to get the server done i just feel it is what is holding us back at the moment :)
Anyone i've forgotten : Help in whatever your specialty is and sorry that i forgot you :)
I hope that you don't find i'm being to dictative and administrive, this entire post is open to critisisms etc.
I hope you found this post well thought out, it was written at 1:05 in the morning so...ya know :)
I will repost this in the main forums so that it can be discussed |

Oh btw in the Mac version (and only the mac version) there is an easy way to play in demo mode (this means you don't connect to the server, all you do is fly around and shoot the ais) to do it enter your password as
USEDEMO
This is only for the mac version as i added it as a quick after thought, it will NOT work on the pc version. |

Well, we all seem to be pretty much settled in to school now. I have had some time for doi though. We are making progress but it is very slow, i am going to upload a new mac version in a bit and a pc version might follow later today but it depends if i see Vulcan before i go to sleep. Anyway, look back at this in 20 mins or so and there should be a new version editted in to this post. We now have a server up that works and a working client to go with its protocol but still no shooting... sorry bout that... it will come... eventually. The new server it is being run on appears to have a faster connection even for me in the uk there is not much lag. So, keep your browser peeled
[Edit] Well. here it is, read the readme for more info on changes : http://www.evula.org/corun/Doi022.sit |

First: no, there isn't a new client release now. Sorry to get people's hopes up with a new post.
Several big changes are in the works:
- Dastal has talked to people at HomeLAN and they're willing to host the Dawn of Infinity server for free! Their servers are of much higher caliber than what we've used before. Once we start using this server, the game will play the same, but the server should be 'up' much more consistently, and we'll be able to support many users as time goes on.
- Geuis plans to register the domain www.dawnofinfinity.org. We're not getting rid of any DoI-related pages; you'll still be able to get to the forums, download page, etc. But soon the project should become more organized, look more professional, and be located at an easy-to-remember address.
- In the last week or so we've decided to rewrite the client. It should be more modular, less prone to lag, and generally written using good programming practices. This will take time, however, even to get back to the same stage as the current client. I would estimate this re-written client to be finished in a few weeks.
We're looking as good as ever, people. Continue sitting on the edges of your seats ;)
[edit]update 11/19
www.dawnofininity.org is now a registered domain (go ahead, try it!) The website is the same as before, but that should change once Chestnut finishes his modifications. The programmers have agreed to work hard over Thanksgiving vacation to get a lot done. Currently we're hoping to have a release around the 1 year anniversary of the project. We also intend to use a server Geuis has access to that uses an OC-3 connection. (Dastal, where'd you go with that HomeLAN server?)

--- NEW VERSION ---
Well, almost. Kind of. By a small stretch of the imagination.
Anyway, Corun and I have been working hard toward a new release, now that we have a bit more time on our hands due to winter vacation. We've entirely revamped the existing code, according to my new object-oriented structure with simplicity and extensibility in mind.
And, armed with this newfound paradigm, this marvel of computer engineering, we've pooled our collective 1337-skillz to create the magnum opus of the New DoI...
the fantastical...
scrumdiddlyumptious...
Splash-Screen-Mock-Release 0.3.0!
That's right, we've made an entirely useless little app, just so that we can boost morale by making a post in the Progress Log and convince everyone that we are, in fact, not dead. (Sorry, GCS. )
Mock Version 0.3.0 - Windows [0.4 MB]
Mock Version 0.3.0 - Mac OS X [0.9 MB]
On the bright side, screenshots are supported (F12), and it uses the fancy new inverted logo. Speaking of which, if some nice graphics expert (read: Goon or Bob) were to superimpose the cool text from the original logo onto the new inverted logo, we would be simply delighted ( ).
Cheers, and Happy Holidays to All! _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

I believe that I can fly!
The new release (0.3.0) is coming along rather nicely, and I'm very impressed with how much more organized all the code is now. Though I have my doubts about the feasibility of a New Year's release, at least be aware that the Dev Team is hard at work, and not dead. _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

I believe that I can fly - again!
DoI 0.3.0 now has a very fancy radar display, as well as shield/armor/energy readings (though, as yet, there is nothing that can damage one's shields/armor, nor anything for which to use any fuel). I decided to throw in some variety by using Goon's fancy gold fighter, blown up to near-cruiser proportions, along with displaying DoI in its native 1024x768. _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

Work is progressing steadily. We've got a new artist that goes by Edfishy, and his work is awesome. Expect a slew of new ships for the next release. We're also working out the details of a storyline that nicely complements a two team arena type game. That's our goal for this next release, but our ultimate goal is still a massively multiplayer game with the expanse that EV players are used to. In a week or two we should have a chance to finish coding the client and server, at which point a major release should be imminent.
[Edit: 2/6/04]Goon wanted a little teaser, so here's a glimpse of what's in store for DoI |

Welly well. It appears that as everyone is pretty much getting to their summer "I can do stuff now" periods work is going to begin again on doi. I contacted Vulcan last night and we did a bit of work. Mainly we tied off some loose ends. A wierd thing is that the client on his computer is not drawing everything and we are not sure why, it seems to work find on mine...I am temporarily blaming MSVC and am going to continue while he tries to fix the problem. I am just starting writing the login screen. Infact i'm just off to look for Goon login screen image :)
Troops are falling in! Get the Umbrellas!!!! :)
Big meeting tonite at the normal time, I'd appreciate it if as many of you were there as possible. |

In deed!
Now that school is (mostly) out, work is progressing by leaps and bounds; we're taking a new tack of developing the client and server together, so that networking should pretty much be a given in any release. (Of course, I still plan to keep my demo mode around, just in case. )
I would post a screenshot of the current client, but it would look an awful lot like previous screeshots - most of the work being done client-side at the moment is under the hood. I have, however, gotten doiserver to compile on both linux and mac os x at home, so we should be getting another server location to test in the near future. I also eliminated those dozens of bothersome warnings. :)
I hesitate to give a date for the next release, because of the fiasco that occurred the last time we did so, but rest assured that the DoI team is hard at work! _________________ ~Vulcan4096 |

Dorth's PC version is now compiling . Thanks to Corun & Vulcan who worked they're butt of to make it work (with me too, would you beleive it?) and now coding can actually begin. I know either Vulcan or me is gonna have the cursor replaced by a picture, because on some cards (lie myn), cursor doesn't show up with the SDL function. Anyway, that's it. Today might have been another uneventful meeting, but instead we made great progress. A new member, who goes by davidcarne around here, has got a Linux client build up and running. Also, the smoothness with which you move around is getting very close to the level we want. At the time of this message we were still working on a Windows build, and there's an annoying bug that doesn't seem to let more than 2 clients on at a time. Geuis said on the discussion forum that the website is complete, it might still get up this weekend. There also might be a little something extra in this release we're working on. <cryptic grin> |

[echoygodlikevoice]BEHOLD! A DoI client release for the first time in over a YEAR![/echoygodlikevoice]
- DoI .3 Pre-Release (4.2 mb)
-Sorry Mac only ATM, we should have a windows build up in the near future.
Man that feels good. The team has been hard at work lately. I would like to thank our newest member of the team, Busonerd. He is probably the person you have to thank for having this version ready. That and Bob and Coruns work on getting movement smoother than ever before. I proably forgot stuff in here somewhere. I don't really know to much but I do know that we have a client boasting the following features.
* 3D shis
* Networking that doesnt suck
* A mouse that works
* A cool looking login screen
* A bunch of other stuff
Known issues
* The mouse doesn't hide when it isn't being used. Just put it off in a courner when your not doing anything with it.

Enough bugs have been fixed in the server to make DoI fun again. Kudos to feanor for the work he's done and continues to do. We are now keeping the server up for as long as we can. I would say always, but crashes are always possible. This is in preparation for the Windows release, which will happen as soon as Vulcan or someone else can release it. To play DoI, use the server home.josephspiros.com and port 6330.
Two big things are left before we can get to version 0.3. The first is better network traffic. Currently the server sends 15 updates per second no matter what. A better way to send data is to only send an update when something changes. The other thing left is weapons; according to feanor finishing weapons code is easier than changing the frequency of updates. However the client isn't as close to handling weapons as the server. Overall we have a handle on what we need to do for the big 0.3 release, but a lot of coding still needs to be done. |

Okay folks, you can call off your goons (pun slightly intended)...
Here she be -- the splenderiferous quasi-0.3 release!
At the moment, the server is in a state of flux (I know not whether electric or magnetic), but when it becomes rather more bug-free, it should be available at home.josephspiros.com:6330 (and potentially later on my own box as well). However, demo mode is once again available by typing "usedemo" (without the quotes) as your password.
Cheers! :)
Version 0.2.9 - Windows [3.9 MB]

That's right, our first release in a long time. The Mac client is available...
here (3.8 MB zip file)
Note this is not version 0.3. This is a 'what we have so far' kind of release. There are still bugs, and things like damage and landing, and most of the ship and weapon content, are not implemented yet. In other words, enjoy this release, and look forward to further improvements! |

We're hard at work (particularly Corun) as Spring Break is providing us free time, though we have time off during different weeks. Here's what's in the works:
- bug fixing, as usual
- changing the client and server substantially so that they use the same code to run the simulation. This is the ideal way to do things, instead of keeping 2 different programs trying to generate and maintain the same data independently
- less hard-coding of data, and more reliance on external configuration files to define the universe
- a new coder has volunteered to implement a software rasterizer that would allow the client to run under older hardware (tiny graphics cards and the like). This is just a nice thing we weren't specifically planning to do.
- a bunch of new faces are popping up, many from EV Online. Some things we need now, and others we don't, but I hope these people stick around until we can put them to work. |
