Background
Dawn of Infinity will be a massively multiplayer space simulation and role playing game that takes place in a dynamic, persistent universe. In the game you will fly a spaceship belonging to one of several governments. You will travel across the galaxy by jumping across hundreds of stellar systems. Most systems will contain one or more planets, moons, or stations, which you can land on. When landed you can buy ship modifications, or even a new spaceship, buy and sell goods, fraternize in the bar, or sign up for missions that various people and groups need done. We may also eventually implement a 1-system arena-style mode to be used in LAN environments. Overall, the gameplay will be similar to the Escape Velocity series by Ambrosia Software, just with a few major changes.
The development of Dawn of Infinity (DoI) began on January 1st, 2003. The small community of developers we have are all fans of a game by Ambrosia Software called Escape Velocity. Escape Velocity puts the player in the pilot seat of his/her own ship and leaves the universe theirs to explore in a very open-ended fashion. Players follow mission strings that advance their characters as they explore the galaxy, trading, battling, and buying new ships and improvements.
One of the biggest fan wants and criticisms of the game is its single-player aspect. For years, people have begged for multi-player capability but the developers have always refused for various reasons. This finally led me to conceive of an open-source version of Escape Velocity that would take the best parts of the that game and add in the necessary changes to allow good multi-player capability.
The game started as OpenEV. We soon found website hosting and development resources at http://www.sourceforge.net. After a few months, we wrote to the president of Ambrosia Software, Andrew Welch, to see if they would have a problem with our free, open-source game having a name based in part on Escape Velocity. After he very politely but firmly told us that the company would have a problem with it, we changed the name to Dawn of Infinity.
Development of DoI has been slow, but has steadily progressed over the last 2 years. We have a dedicated group of developers and fans that have stuck by, while some have come and gone.
Work continues and we expect massive progress in the coming future.
